Destruction our Music city New Orleans

hello fellow HODers, cold monday here . I would just like to say that the national out pouring of support over the last 4 days for the enravaged areas of new orleans and the adjacent gulf coast proves and is testament to the spirit of the American public. Its kindness, caring,and empathy have been evident and will continue im sure as the monumental task of rebuilding New Orleans gets underway. Just as an update, the water levels are not rising even though the 3 major levee breeches are not completely filled. Evacations continue with an estimated 30 to 60 thousand people still requiring evacuation. This total is being reduced everyday and it is my sincere hope that each of my fellow locals is brought to safety. The first few thousand troops have arrived under the command of Gen. Honore who has assumed a level of quiet command that is nothing short of inspiring .You guys would be impressed with this man's focus and attention to detail. Two hospital ships are dispatched to the area and should arrive within 32 hours. Our skys are now filled with Chinooks, black hawk helicopters, and coast guard choppers who continue the search and rescue efforts. These helicopters are also dropping several thousand pound bags of sand and huge pieces of concrete into the 17th st. levee breech which allowed 10 ft of water to flood my neighborhood as well as almost the entire east side of the city.There mile long convoys of highwater trucks bringing in supplys and badly needed MRE's to the evacuees waiting to be airlifted. Our international airport has been converted into a trioge and temporary hospital for the critically ill. Our neighboring state of Texas has accepted close to 100,OOO evacuees in houston , san antonio, and dallas . More of this kind of effort over a sustained period of time will be needed and im sure will come . Thank you, and god bless our great nation, our great people.

They KNEW that this would happen someday, yet they never made the necessary fixes. They KNEW that Katrina was on its way, and yet they didn't prepare the proper evacuations for the poor and destitute. It's shameful, and no one will forget it.

What is most encouraging and wonderful about this forum is that it gives us the opportunity to celebrate what we love the most : drums, music , and people. The contribution of drummers to the worldwide cultural history of our planet is incalculable. What New Orleans as a culture has contributed to the evolution of our instrument {the trap drum set} is also something to be cherished. These conditions are what we share in addition to our diverse intrests and humanity. Im sure I speak for all when i say i love drums and drumming. I salute you all and say thanks for your attention to this dire situation that will reqire much effort for a prolonged period of time . God bless HOD.

I saw a weary, frustrated mayor of Jefferson Parish {a part of New Orleans} during a press conference say " stop blaming, stop assigning blame...theyre people to blame, but not now ....lets rescue these people . We got trouble and lots of it....NO MORE PRESS CONFRENCES ,SHUT UP AND SEND SOMEBODY" I know that my presenting this quote may APPEAR to be apologetic or in defense of the current administration's early response on a local,state, and national level. Please understand ,IT IS NOT. I care about the present and future. I care about our fellow displaced musicians , i care about the great musical community which largely has little resources to cope with the financial realities of the next year as rebuilding efforts continue. Ive got friends that Ive gigged with on Bourbon St. missing or in homeless shelters. I care about what will be left for musicians that on a large scale provide the spiritual sustainence for a culture when they DO return. I care about what the future of whole industries {hospitality and otherwise} that employ musicians here. They are and will be severely damaged for a long time. Remaing positive and strong is all we have . That will continue. I agree with the Mayor when he says "we have to rebuild". That is what i am soley concerned with for myself and my brothers, my fellow New Orleanians..........conservative troll or liberal whatver.......WHO CARES...political affiliations and ideological or personal battles threaten to divide a public which is uniting to deal with this national tragedy. I will further say that i hope people still care months from now as they do now because New Orleans will be rebuilding for a long time to come......

That discussion about funding is interesting (controversial too!). Of course you can't prevent the hurricane itself from happening, but the damage could have been minimized, according to this article:

Update: city wide dredging and dewatering continues. The presence of E Coli bacteria has been detected in some flooded areas. Some people refuse to leave and the rest are at Johnie Whites in the Quarter which believe it or not is still open serving drinks..i guess resilience comes in all forms.......
